During launch, Logo executes the commands that you defined in the Startup Commands section. This can be used to configure Logo settings for all students. A few examples:

Layouts

MAKE "LAYOUT list

The LAYOUT variable sets and returns the layout of Logo panels. This is a complex list. You could, for example, drag and resize the Logo panels, then execute the command :LAYOUT. Then, copy the returned list and paste it into the MAKE command above. "BASIC selects only the Graphics and Listener panels; "VERTICAL selects a vertical layout for the Graphics and Listener panels; "BLOCKS selects the Logo Blocks layout, and "STANDARD the standard layout. Relaxed Syntax

Turn on Relaxed Syntax so students do not have to enter the colon character in front of names. There are several more settings available, see this documentation page for more info.

The Prompt

Make "PROMPT "

Define the text of the prompt. The above command, for example, removes the prompt altogether.

The Startup Folder

Define the current folder for load and save operations. You can use the following special patterns as part of a file or folder name, which Logo substitues with the student's login info. In the desktop version, Logo uses the student's system login name to replace the {USERNAME} field if you do not use a CSV file to define login information.

• {USERNAME} the student's login name
• {HOME} the home folder (desktop version)
• {DOCUMENTS} the Documents folder (desktop version)
• {DOWNLOADS} the Downloads folder (desktop version)
• {CLASSROOM} the student's classroom if defined in the CSV file

Example: SETCURDIR "|~PC/H/STUDENTS/{USERNAME}|

This file contains a list of names, passwords (optional), and classrooms (optional). Upload this file if you want more control over the login process, and if you want to use the login information as part of the student's current folder (see below).

Columns

Name:	This can be the full name, or a login name. It is the only required field, and must be unique within a classroom. If you don't define a classroom, the user name must be unique within the entire CSV file.
Password:	If not present, the student uses the name to login.
Classroom:	If present, the student's name needs only to be unique within each classroom.

The login dialog varies depending on this information. Usually, the student logs in with the campus name, followed by a dot and the classroom name. The campus name can be omitted if you use the desktop version together with a logo.conf file. If yo do not define any classrooms in the CSV file, the login dialog does not display the "Classroom" field at all if you work with a logo.conf file. Similarly, the login dialog does not ask for a password if you do not have any defined.

Use of Login Information

You can use the student's login info to define the current folder for load and save operations. You define the current folder in the Startup Code block. A file name can contain a number of special patterns that Logo substitutes with the corresponding parts of the login info:

• {USERNAME} the current user's login name
• {HOME} the home folder (desktop version)
• {DOCUMENTS} the Documents folder (desktop version)
• {DOWNLOADS} the Downloads folder (desktop version)
• {CLASSROOM} the student's classroom if defined in the CSV file

Example: SETCURDIR "|~PC/H/STUDENTS/{CLASSROOM}/{USERNAME}|

The use of a configuration file requires the desktop verion of Terrapin Logo and the latest version of the Logo installer, which can be found on our Downloads page.

Once Logo has been installed, you (or the system admin) can edit the logo.conf file to alter the settings. The altered file needs to be stored with every installed copy of Logo.The logo.conf file contains configuration information for the desktop version. It resides in the resources/Logo subfolder of the Terrapin Logo installation:

Mac: /Applications/TerrapinLogo.app/Contents/Resources/Logo

Currently, there is only one entry campus=campus name. This name must match the campus name that you entered on this web page. We use this information to verify your license; we also use the information to make logins simpler (there is no need to enter the campus name), and to implement vetting.

If you do not use classroom names in the student CSV file, student login can be as simple as entering a username, as long as it is unique. You can also enable automatic logins to have Logo use the student's system login name.

With the current campus name, the file "logo.conf" would contain this line:
